A skilled workforce is absolutely critical for continued economic growth, a need increasingly recognized at the highest levels of the government and by the industries at large. A National Council for Skill Development headed by the Prime Minister himself was setup in 2008 and set the skilling of 500 million people by the year 2022 as its target.
Several high growth sectors with increasing demand for skilled individuals have also been identified
The nature of the demand is such that the requisite skills can be acquired through a broad spectrum of trainings and qualifications - short focused courses of a couple of months as well as multi-year diplomas.
Career opportunities, both entrepreneurial and job based, are expected to proliferate for those with the in-demand skills
